Indy Comic Book Week

Great ideas don’t come along all that often in the Direct Market, but Indy Comic Book Week is just the kind of idea that, if it takes hold, could turn into something really special.

The brainchild of Vinh –Luan Liu, Indy Comic Book Week was inspired by the recent announcement that Diamond Comics Distributors would not be shipping any new mainstream comics the week of Dec. 30, 2009. Where some might have seen this news as a disappointment, Liu and his colleagues are encouraging retailers across the country to use this opportunity to promote and spotlight indy creators in their local area. This seems like a win/win scenario to me. Retailers get a chance to sell some new comics on what would otherwise be a light week. Indy creators get a chance to spotlight their books on newsstands uncluttered with the latest deluge of superhero and other mainstream books, and fans get a chance to sample something new and off the beaten path.

In order to get the ball rolling, Liu has setup a blog where indy cartoonists can promote their work. The main website also has information on small press distributors and a list of participating retailers. Liu has also uploaded a series of promotional videos aimed at helping cartoonists and retailers connect. The key is to spread the word and get as many creators as possible to take the initiative in contacting their local retailers.

Check out the website for more information and if you’re a retailer, small press publisher, or a creator, consider participating in this very worthwhile effort.
